Kodanad View Point Kotagiri

Ooty Botanical Garden History and Timings to Visit

Botanical Garden is one of the best tourist attraction places which attract the tourist from all over the world. This garden was laid out in 1847 by the Marquis of Tweedale and is spread over 22 hectares ascending the slopes on the hill at an elevation of 2,400 meters above Main Sea Level. One of the most beautiful attractions in Ooty is the Botanical Garden, situated on a hillock. Spread over 55 acres the Botanical Garden was laid out in the year 1847 by the Marquis of Tweedale. The garden is taken care of by the Horticulture Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Flourishing green well maintained lawns, rare trees species a 20 million year old fossil tree, a monkey’s puzzle tree – monkeys can’t climb this tree, an Italian - style garden bordering, a immense variety of flowering bushes, flowers, and plants , fern house with a vast range ferns and orchids, a clear pool are some of the highlights of this garden. . Not surprisingly, it’s a favorite destination for students who specialize in plant science.

The Garden is maintained by the Horticulture Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu and has a very wide variety of plants that include different types of roses, imported shrubs, rare flowering plants etc. The east hill of this garden also houses the tribes of Nilgiris, called Todas. Their tradition and culture is a matter of significance if you were interested in human civilization.

The "Summer Festivals" is held each year during the month of May in the Botanical Garden. A flower show along with an exhibition of rare plant species is held every year in the third weekend of May at this garden. If you were lucky enough you may run into your favorite movie hero or heroine.

Ideally, the month of May is thebest time to visit the Botanical Garden, as there are several exhibitions and other programmes organised, which draws many tourists to the venue.

The exclusive feature of the ‘monkey puzzle tree’ in the Botanical Garden is that monkeys cannot climb this tree!
